Şile cloth, a product crafted with craftsmanship and artistry, is one of Turkey’s most valuable fabric varieties. Originating from the use of linen threads in ancient times, this product maintains its natural essence with cotton, another very pure material, due to the decrease in linen in the region. This fabric, blended with Şile’s history, not only brings handcraftsmanship to our homes but also reflects the culture of the region.
As a Geographical Indication Product:
Due to the unique production processes specific to the region and the significant contribution of the people of Şile, especially women, to its production, Şile Cloth became Istanbul’s first geographical indication product in 2017. We aim to promote this valuable fabric worldwide by preserving our local culture and increasing employment opportunities for Şile women.
The Story of Şile Cloth Throughout History:
In ancient times, many households in the region had weaving looms called ‘black looms’. The physical labor and artistry of the local people in the production process led to the creation of a fabric that could breathe when combined with the waters and sands of the Black Sea. During the Şile Cloth Festival, held at certain times of the year, the traditional method’s all stages are reenacted on the beach. Nowadays, modern looms are used to meet the increasing demand while preserving the product’s durability, natural, and authentic spirit. Additionally, the production, weaving, and embroidering of Şile Cloth have always been in the skilled hands of women.
